The Fuji Five Lakes (Lakes Yamanaka, Kawaguchi, Saiko, Shoji and Motosu) is the most popular tourist route in exploring the area around Mt. Fuji. Each lake gives a different perspective, some have panoramic viewing decks, others with ropeways, but my personal favorite was Lake Kawaguchi (more on that later). If you don’t have a car, there are bus passes that allow you to travel along the Fuji Five Lake route, though you lose flexibility.

recommendation would be take a trip around Mt. Fuji from Otsuki, Kawaguchiko, lake Yamanaka, Gotemba (outlet mall), the Hakone skyline, mt. Fuji skyline (rt 23 to152 to 180), the Shiraito falls, Asagiri plateau, Aokigahara forest, and other 3 lakes.

There is also some pass available for it http://bus-en.fujikyu.co.jp/mtpass/ and https://www.odakyu.jp/english/passes/fujihakone/

  • if you don't have a JR Pass, drop the car off at Kawaguchiko and take the bus to Tokyo.
  • If you plan to head south to visit the Izu Peninsula, pick up in either Mishima or Atami - no drop-off charge if you return car in either
  • The most efficient route is to pick up at Atami, go to Hakone in between and return at Kawaguchiko (if you don't have a JR Pass) or Otsuki (if you have a JR Pass). There is a drop-off fee of roughly 6,500 Yen. It's not a bad deal though since you won't need to backtrack to Atami, thus saving you lots of time, fuel and toll fees.
  •  besides the International Driving Permit and passport you are also required to bring along your own country home driving license although most car rental agencies just ask for the IDP to simplify procedure upon registration.
  • toll road that leads to Kawaguchiko 5th Station (2000 yen round trip). Plus gasoline and eventual parking fees.

Ginzo

Neighbourhood Top Five
1 Feasting your eyes and stomach on denizens of the deep at Tsukiji Market.
2 Browsing some of Japan’s poshest shops and top department stores in Ginza.
3 Being entertained by the technicolor spectacle of kabuki drama at Kabukiza.
4 Sipping green tea in the beautiful bayside garden Hama-rikyū Onshi-teien.
5 Snacking on yakitori (chicken skewers) with salarymen and women under
the tracks at Yūrakuchō.

Tsukiji Market
The world's biggest seafood market moves an astounding 2000
tonnes of seafood a day. You can see all manner of fascinating
creatures here, but it is the maguro (bluefin tuna) that has emerged as
the star. Get up at dawn and you can see these prized fish auctioned off
to the highest bidder. Tsukiji Market is one of Tokyo's unique sights, and
a rare peek into the working life of the city. Follow up your visit with sushi
breakfast in the market.

Tuna Auctions
Tsukiji's star attraction is maguro (bluefin tuna) as big as submarine torpedos
and weighing up to 300kg: the sight (and sound) of these flash frozen whoppers
being auctioned is a classic Tokyo experience, worth getting up early (or staying
up late) for.
Visitors start showing up for one of the 120 places to view the tuna auction
from around 3.30am at the Fish Information Center ( おさかな普及センター;Osakana
Fukyū Senta MAP GOOGLE MAP ; Kachidoki Gate, 6-20-5 Tsukiji, Chūō-ku) at the northwest
corner of the market. It's on a first-come, first-served basis so it pays to get here
well before the first batch of 60 visitors go into to see the auctions between
5.25am and 5.50am; the second batch is from 5.50am to 6.15am. Public
transport doesn't start until around 5am, so you'll either need to walk or take a
taxi to the market.
In the past, the authorities have suspended viewing of the tuna auctions
because of inappropriate behaviour by tourists, so please follow the rules. Over
the busy new-year period viewings are usually cancelled.

Sanja Matsuri :

It is held in celebration of the three founders of Sensoji Temple, who are enshrined in Asakusa Shrine next door to the temple. Nearly two million people visit Asakusa over the three days of the festival, making it one of Tokyo's most popular festivals.

The Sanja Matsuri features about one hundred portable shrines (mikoshi) in which Shinto deities (kami) are symbolically placed into and paraded about the streets to bring good fortune to the local businesses and residents. Smaller neighborhood mikoshi can be seen about the streets of Asakusa throughout the festival, while the focus of the festival, the three large mikoshi belonging to Asakusa Shrine, make their appearance on Sunday. For the entirety of the festival, Asakusa is packed with food stalls, festival games and revelers amid a lively atmosphere of Japanese drums and flutes.

Getting there and around

The Sanja Matsuri takes place on and around the grounds of Sensoji Temple a few steps from Asakusa Station, which is served by the Ginza Subway Line, Asakusa Subway Line and Tobu Railways.

From Tokyo Station

Take the JR Yamanote Line to Kanda Station (2 minutes, 150 yen) and transfer to the Ginza Subway Line for Asakusa (10 minutes, 180 yen).

 Four options:
1)The fast and expensive limited express trains from Asakusa Station in Tokyo (we took this!)
These trains are run by Tobu Railway and leaves from Asakusa Station in Tokyo to Tobu-Nikko Station in Nikko. There are one or two limited express trains per hour between Asakusa and Tobu-Nikko Station. The train ride takes about two hours and costs around 2700-2800 Yen (=25US$) one way. Some connections require a transfer at Shimo-Imaichi Station.
You can find the timetable for the Nikko limited express train HERE.
The Japan Rail Pass and other JR passes are unfortunately NOT valid on these Tobu trains.
Tobu Railway is, however, offering various passes for tourists, which include the round trip from Tokyo to Nikko and unlimited use of buses in the Nikko area. Note that the passes do not cover the supplement fee required on limited express trains (1340-1440 Yen one way). We bought the Nikko City Area Pass, a 2-day ticket to Nikko by Tobu Railway. Although we only used one day (we only did a day-trip from Tokyo).
You can either buy this online from this link, or at TOBU Tourist Information Center ASAKUSA at Tobu Asakusa Station
2) . The fast but expensive limited express train from Shinjuku Station in Tokyo
Direct limited express trains, cooperated by Japan Railways (JR) and Tobu Railway, connect JR Shinjuku Station with Tobu Nikko Station. The one-way journey takes two hours and costs 4000 Yen (=36us$). The JR Pass is valid on these trains.
From Nikko train station there are buses (190 JPY = 2 us$) up to the temple and shrine area, or you can walk (uphill for about 20 min). Bus stops are announced in English.

You have to buy tickets at each temple and shrine:
  • Tosho-gu Shrine: about 1300 JPY = 12 us$
  • Rinno-ji Temple: about 400 JPY = 4 us$ (Sanbutsudo only), 300 JPY = 3 us$ (Treasure House and Shoyoen Garden)
  • Taiyuin-byo Shrine: about 550 JPY = 5 us$
  • Futarasan-jinja Shrine:  about 200 JPY = 2 us$

 Takayama

Sanmachi, heart of Takayama

The heart of Takayama city, the Sanmachi area of preserved buildings, attracts tourists from all over the country. You could spend a whole day wandering these old streets, buying souvenirs from the many craft shops, sampling local tea and digging into local treats like wagyu sushi.

A number of sake breweries are also located in and around the Sanmachi district, and tasting is possible.

Japanese Style Accommodation

Takayama (Morning Market / Takayama Jinya / Old Town), Matsumoto (Matsumoto Castle) Day 11

After enjoying a Japanese breakfast at the ryokan, we will continue sightseeing in Takayama. Browse through the market stalls at the Morning market for local crafts and fresh produce. Next, visit Takayama Jinya, a former local government office that now serves as a public museum. It features an interesting interrogation room and official documents of past feudal lords. Proceed to Takayama's beautifully preserved Old Town, which highlights many buildings and whole streets of houses dating from the Edo Period (1600- 1868). In the afternoon, our group will visit the Matsumoto Castle, also known as "Crow Castle" because of its black exterior. Inside, we can see the best examples of a wooden constructed, traditional Japanese-style castle. It is classified as a "hirajiro", meaning it is a castle built on plains rather than on a hill or mountain.

A smorgasbord for history buffs

Takayama is a haven for history buffs. Hida Folk Village (Hida-no-Sato)  preserves more than 30 historic buildings from the Hida area, including traditional homes with thatched roofs, some steep-angled in the local Gassho-zukuri style.

Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kanazawa, and explore the city.

Day 3 Takayama:

Take a Takayama-based Nobi bus from Kanazawa to Shirakawago, leave your luggage at the bus center there, while you explore the World Heritage Village for a few hours, then take another Nobi bus to Takayama.

Mt Fuji, Hakone (Hakone Ropeway / Owakudani), Tokyo (Shibuya - Shibuya Crossing - Hachiko Statue)

Today, we will travel to Mt. Fuji on our private luxury coach. If the weather is in our favor, we will stop by the Mt. Fuji 5th Station for a grand view of Japan's famous mountain. Enjoy an extensive tour of Hakone by taking a 20 minute ropeway ride from Togendai to Owakudani. Owakudani is known for its active volcanic zone that was created from the eruption of Mount Hakone some 3,000 years ago. Here, you can experience its hot springs and bubbling pools, where volcanic gases still linger. From there, we will travel to Tokyo and spend time in Shibuya. There, you will get to see the famed Shibuya Crossing in action and cross the street with the crowd. You will also be able to take photos with the Hachiko Statue, a monumen
